ASRC Federal Advanced Research (AFAR), a subsidiary of ASRC Federal, has secured a competitive award to continue providing critical engineering support and technical expertise to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Second Level Engineering Services (SLES) program will maintain navigation, power, communications, surveillance, automation, weather systems and infrastructure for the National Airspace System (NAS) under a potential five-year Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract.

The ASRC Federal team will deliver 24/7/365 field support, configuration management, systems integration, acquisition support, and program management services ensuring reliability, safety, and operational continuity across the NAS.

The $437 million SLES program plays a critical role in supporting ongoing NAS modernization efforts. Through this work, ASRC Federal will help strengthen the resilience, scalability, and performance of air traffic control systems that serve millions of passengers and stakeholders each year.

ASRC Federal has supported the FAA since 2007, bringing deep institutional knowledge and engineering and technical support to a broad range of FAA systems that consist of more than 74,000 individual pieces of equipment across the NAS.

Emily Plummer leads an Agile team supporting the Division of Enterprise Architecture at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and guides cross-functional teams in designing, integrating and maintaining enterprise-level systems that align with CMS’s strategic architecture, federal standards and business objectives. She facilitates Agile ceremonies, manages technical backlogs and ensures the delivery of scalable, secure and compliant solutions across a complex healthcare IT environment.

Q: What inspired you to have a career in engineering?
A: I was inspired to pursue a career in engineering because I’ve always been drawn to solving complex problems that have real-world impact. Engineering offers the opportunity to turn ideas into practical solutions, and I am motivated by knowing that the systems we design and support directly affect people’s lives.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being an engineer?
A: I enjoy breaking down complex problems, collaborating with talented teammates and designing practical, scalable solutions. John Bevz, Mechanical and Fire Protection Engineer

John Bevz is a senior mechanical and fire protection engineer. At Kirtland Air Force Base, John offers technical guidance and evaluation of equipment malfunctions to assist in timely and effective repairs. He also provides design review of new construction building plans and specifications as well as oversees inspections for military construction and internal customer-funded projects.

Q: What inspired you to have a career in engineering?
A: I’ve been building and constructing since I was a kid. From Legos to skateboard ramps, I’ve always had an affinity for creating. Great mentors inspired me to pursue engineering, as I excelled at math and spatial awareness came naturally to me. I was inspired by the following quote from Nobel Prize-winning American theoretical physicist Richard P. Feynman, “It is wonderful if you can find something you love to do in your youth which is big enough to sustain your interest through all your adult life.” That is what engineering is for me.

Q: What role does innovation play in helping your customers achieve their missions?
A: Our commitment to mission success is demonstrated through the strategic implementation of advanced technologies that deliver tangible results for our customers. By leveraging artificial intelligence capabilities, we are accelerating workflows and data synthesis, enabling personnel to pivot from routine tasks to high-value strategic objectives. Concurrently, our adoption of new, energy-efficient refrigerant standards is producing significant operational advantages. These advanced refrigerants, paired with modern compressor technology, not only reduce the electrical grid load and lower operational costs but also underscore our dedication to sustainability, ensuring our customers benefit from enhanced performance and a reduced environmental footprint.

Etta Johnston, Quality Assurance Engineer
BadgerWorks Team and Customers, Supply Chain Management & Logistics Operating Group

As a quality assurance engineer, Etta Johnston helps maintain AS9100 compliance while ensuring the quality and reliability of our products. She’s directly involved in the engineering design process, working closely with the engineering team to build quality into products from the very beginning.

Q: What inspired you to have a career in engineering?
A: I’ve always enjoyed learning new things, and engineering gives me that opportunity every day. I love seeing ideas turn into real, tangible products, and I’m especially drawn to the discipline and structure of maintaining a strong quality system that supports that process.

Q: What skills or traits do you think are most important for success in this discipline?
A: Keeping an open mind and thinking outside the box are essential, along with discipline and attention to detail. It’s also important not to be afraid to start over, learn from challenges and continuously improve.

Noel Yim-Levin, Task Order Lead and Systems Engineer
Federal Aviation Administration, Civilian & Health Operating Group

As a task order lead, Noel Yim-Levin supports systems within the Federal Aviation Administration’s National Airspace Systems. Her work focuses on secondary support, upgrades, maintenance and design of technical systems. She is responsible for leading contractors, such as computer scientists, engineers, technical specialists, project coordinators, technical writers and configuration management specialists.

Q: What inspired you to have a career in engineering?
A: A career in engineering is truly inspirational to me because it focuses on solving real-world challenges while contributing positively to society. An engineering degree provides multidisciplinary exposure. Engineers learn to think analytically and structurally and are able to translate between business and system designs. The engineering discipline brings flexibility and is transferable across industries.

Q: What’s the most rewarding part of helping our customers achieve their goals through engineering?
A: I enjoy identifying technical solutions and continuous improvement opportunities to provide business benefits for our customers. I create value for them by improving efficiency, strengthening contractor team effectiveness, reducing costs and producing positive impacts. The most rewarding part is being a problem solver to help my customers succeed.

Brett Anderson, Mechanical Engineer
Defense Logistics Agency, Apache Program Management Office and Javelin Joint Venture, Supply Chain Management & Logistics Operating Group

Brett Anderson’s role involves redesigning physical products to make them better, cheaper and/or to fix existing problems with a current product. This involves a lot of computer-aided design (CAD) modeling and technical drawing creation for sending out the designs to be manufactured.

Q: What inspired you to have a career in engineering?
A: Since I was young, I have always been interested in the way things work. As I grew older and learned more, I started thinking of ways that things could work better if they were designed differently.

Q: What excites you most about the future of engineering in your discipline?
A: I’m excited about additive manufacturing becoming more advanced. The more precise that parts can be printed and the more materials we can print with, this will open up even more applications for additive manufacturing to be used in mechanical designs.

I develop and manage requirements that define Orion’s integration and processing activities, ensuring the spacecraft meets mission��objectives. After NASA takes ownership of the Artemis vehicle, I support its processing, coordinate��launch��preparation��activities��and help resolve any technical issues that may arise.��

What is one highlight from your work on the Orion program or supporting Artemis II that��you’re��most proud of?
I worked with a team to develop,��design��and test the new thermal barrier plugs to meet Artemis II mission requirements. The new plug design significantly cuts installation time and accelerates the closeout process. I developed a plan and fixture for a vibration test to qualify the new plug design and selected the plugs to be used for the first launch attempt.��

Why My Work Matters (In Their Own Words):
I’m��honored to contribute to the exploration of space, humanity’s return to the Moon, and eventually to Mars and beyond.��Every��day brings challenging problems that require close collaboration to keep the vehicle and crew safe. Being part of this historic mission is truly indescribable.��

Personal Fun Fact:
When I was��7��years old,��I sat in the seats used for��NASA’s��Exploration Flight Test-1 (EFT-1),��which was the first flight test of the crew module��portion��of the Orion spacecraft!��

What do you love about working at ASRC Federal?
I love the collaborative, positive culture and the great people at ASRC Federal. The company’s core values – integrity, accountability and continuous improvement – are values that I hold in high regard. What��is your role in��this��NASA program, and how did your contributions help bring this historic test flight to life?��
My team��is responsible for��creating manufacturing work instructions and supporting the production floor during the assembly and testing of Orion’s wire harnesses. This includes reviewing engineering drawings,��determining��the manufacturability of��new designs��and creating solutions for problems that occur during the manufacturing process.��

What is one highlight from your work on the Orion program or supporting Artemis II that��you’re��most proud of?
I’m proud of spearheading the creation of a new production line of cables for Orion that were previously purchased from a vendor. This involved meeting numerous requirements and the development of all new testing procedures and manufacturing techniques. This will enable the Orion production team to be more independent and have a higher level of control over product quality.��

Why My Work Matters (In Their Own Words):
I’m��incredibly proud to work on America’s space program and be a small part of the��exceptional��team sending astronauts back to the Moon.��I think NASA’s Artemis program��not only serves to advance our��Nation’s technological��abilities, but��will inspire people from all around the world.��

The Orion spacecraft has over 20 miles of wires running through it to connect and power��all of��its systems!��

What do you love about working at ASRC Federal?
The people – I’m part of an amazing team with some of the best people you could ever ask to work with. I’ve learned so much from them, and they’ve helped me grow professionally and personally.��

What��is your role in��this��NASA program, and how did your contributions help bring this historic test flight to life?��
I work on the Orion program as a make part planner for the crew module adapter, service module and crew service module. I serve as the intermediary between production operational needs and procurement activities to ensure materials and parts are available and ready to use for scheduled installation. I also assist with the maintenance of production orders, on-floor inventory and bill of materials integrity.��

What is one highlight from your work on the Orion program or supporting Artemis II that��you’re��most proud of?
Comparatively speaking, being one of few individuals worldwide to contribute to the historic Artemis II Orion capsule is truly an extraordinary honor and humbling experience.��

Our work matters because our efforts��on the Artemis program create a��lasting��impact beyond��the��mission��itself.��

About the DoD SkillBridge Program

DoD’s SkillBridge is a free training internship program designed to provide opportunities for eligible active-duty military service members, helping them gain valuable experience in the civilian working environment and preparing them for their transition. In 2021, ASRC Federal became a DoD SkillBridge industry partner, and this program is an additional way we can recruit and hire our Nation’s veterans.����

The ASRC Federal team at Fort Huachuca in Arizona has a strong history of transforming SkillBridge interns into full-time team members who play pivotal roles as key contributors and project leaders on a variety of intelligence and defense contracts. The transition from military to civilian life comes with unique challenges, but the Fort Huachuca team ensures these service members do not navigate it alone.����

ASRC Federal has successfully hired multiple SkillBridge interns over the last few years, with each of them transitioning seamlessly from military service into civilian roles. “The program offers transitioning service members critical experience that helps set them up for long-term, future success, as well as a potential direct pathway to a meaningful and rewarding civilian career,” says Kirk McIntosh, program manager with ASRC Federal’s Fort Huachuca team (Defense & Intelligence Operating Group) who oversees their SkillBridge internship program. “It’s impactful because they continue supporting the warfighter, just in a new capacity.”��

Fort Huachuca Success Stories

Three former SkillBridge interns, now full-time employees with ASRC Federal’s Defense & Intelligence Operating Group share their insights on the Fort Huachuca program.��

“Learning to think, talk and be accountable as a civilian in the government contractor arena is the hard part about the military retirement transition. The internship environment allows one to adjust without the pressure of having to get everything right immediately, removing much of the stress many veterans face when leaving the military,” says Andrew Jackson, a data integration expert.

“When I started my SkillBridge internship, I had no idea how smooth my transition would be. I worked with professionals who truly cared about me, my career and my success. In just a few months of my internship, I was hired full-time and eventually stepped into a management role supporting an intelligence contract. ASRC Federal took care of me – and I haven’t looked back,” says Rich Smith, program manager.��

“My SkillBridge internship was more than just a career transition, it was a transformative experience that equipped me with pivotal skills, industry knowledge and a renewed sense of purpose beyond military service,” says Ray Hibbert, program manager.��

Building a Stronger Workforce in Support of the Mission��

The program is not only about filling positions, but also about building a sustainable talent pipeline of highly-motivated professionals. These service members bring technical expertise, leadership and mission understanding that make an immediate impact on our government contracts. As former military leaders, analysts and military intelligence professionals, SkillBridge interns have the operational knowledge that ASRC Federal contracts at Fort Huachuca require, along with the drive and discipline to make a difference.������

SkillBridge is more than an internship; it is a long-term workforce strategy designed to strengthen our company and the government customers we support through:

Smith has overseen multiple interns during his role as a program manager. “What impresses me most about SkillBridge interns is their sense of purpose and direction. They are highly motivated, eager to apply their skills and knowledge and committed to ongoing learning and growth.”������

The results speak for themselves. At Fort Huachuca, six of the seven interns who completed the program have joined the ASRC Federal team – two of which have stepped into leadership roles and are making an impact on Army Intelligence programs. During ASRC Federal’s fourth annual Tech Summit, technologists, innovators and company leaders convened to tackle customer challenges, explore the future of technology and exchange insights on how to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving tech landscape. With sessions on artificial intelligence (AI), software and digital engineering, cybersecurity and more, the Summit offered presentations on industry trends and emerging technologies while providing opportunities to build skills, make meaningful connections and learn to embrace what’s next. ����

The Tech Summit kicked off with a capture the flag event (hosted by TryHackMe), which showcased the power of collaboration and brilliant minds, and ended with actionable strategies and a renewed commitment to innovation to help solve customer problems and achieve mission success.��

This summer, ASRC Federal welcomed 20 students from universities across the country to its third annual Summer Technology Readiness Intern Development Experience (STRIDE) Program, designed to cultivate the company’s next generation of entry-level technology and information systems talent.����

Over the course of 10 weeks, students explored how their academic studies in engineering, IT and software development could be applied to mission-critical work in the government sector. The program included hands-on experience and guidance from both a manager and a mentor, professional development sessions and career advice from company leaders.��

“We had an incredibly bright and collaborative group of students who were eager to learn this year,” said Eric Velte, ASRC Federal Chief Technology Officer. “They excelled throughout the program, demonstrating a passion for innovation and contributing to project goals.”��

The interns attended ASRC Federal’s annual Tech Summit earlier this month, immersing themselves in solutions for artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and other emerging technologies and gaining a deeper insight into the company’s technical capabilities. The STRIDE graduation ceremony, held in conjunction with the Summit, honored the interns’ accomplishments and included video presentations of their summer projects. In recognition of its STRIDE program, ASRC Federal was named one of Virginia’s leading employers for interns in 2025. The award, presented by the Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership (V-TOP) in collaboration with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, the Virginia Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the Virginia Business Higher Education Council, celebrates organizations that demonstrate commitment to internship programs and workforce development. ��
